Mir Abidur Rahman

(English Adaptation of the speech delivered by Inspector General, Bangladesh Police, Dr. Benazir Ahmed BPM (Bar) on 12th December, 2020 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre where officers of twenty-nine BCS cadre services under the banner of the Forum for Government Employees attended a protest to condemn the vandalizing of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s sculpture.)

At first, I would like to give my best wishes of our great victory day to everyone. It’s a month of our great victory day; I modestly am remembering Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his family members, who became martyred on 15th August 1975 and all the common people of this country who aroused by the calling of Bangabandhu, went on a war against a powerful invading Military Force. I am conveying my deepest respect to our freedom fighters- the brave Muktijoddha and praying for the departed souls of three million martyred people.

My dear colleagues, we are highly condemning the act of vandalizing Bangabandhu, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s sculpture, and deeply denouncing those evil culprits who committed such a heinous act at the veil of a night. We often find that some culprits are trying to pull back the development of our motherland quite repeatedly while the whole country is moving very fast towards its golden future under the leadership of our honorable Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. Eighteen Crore people of Bangladesh are united under the firm leadership of our honorable Prime Minister like the people who were united under the leadership of Bangabandhu back in 1971; we strongly want our country to move ahead in every sector.

I will not talk about the protest today because we are government employees; we are part of the government and we are the government under the leadership of the honorable Prime Minister. We will firmly deal with any kind of attack against the state or the native people of the state according to the prevailing laws and regulations of the country. To me, Bangabandhu means Bangladesh. Bangabandhu is a part of Our Country’s Constitution; Bangabandhu gave us this country; delivered flag and map of this country; established the recognition of Bengali Language. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the key pioneer behind Bangladesh’s current global recognition in the field of development. An attack upon him means an attack upon the constitution; an attack upon the state and its people. The state will encounter it strongly according to the prevailing laws and regulations of the country. As a part of the government we, the government employees would like to assure and reassure the eighteen-crore people of this country that nobody can touch the freedom, constitution, and the father of our country. The eighteen-crore people and state are going to confront it. It is to be remembered that the state is extremely powerful; one should not dare to act against the state as it means to go against the eighteen-crore people of this country; it means to go against the constitution of this country. To show defiance against the state means to show defiance against the three million martyred of our liberation war under the leadership of Bangabandhu back in 1971 and the state or the nation is not going to tolerate this.

The people of this country possess a deep respect for the Imams and Islamic Scholars. The Imams and enlightened Islamic Scholars of this part of the world never preached Islam by the power of the sword; they preached the holy Quran and the messages of Allah with the power of love and affection and millions of people converted to Islam because of their beautiful ways of preaching.

However, it’s a matter of inmost contempt that nowadays some are muscle flexing with the state; go back, sit back and try to realize what you are doing. My country is born by our great liberation war; my country is a secular country and we are strongly committed to upholding the morals and principles of this country. More than fourteen lakhs of government employees are currently working and it’s our prime responsibility to uphold the morals of our motherland.

Apart from that, implementing an all-inclusive education system is extremely necessary for our country. Once, a certain type of Huzur used to convey that taking pictures is haram, watching television is haram; but nowadays, they are using YouTube channels for spreading rumors and it has become very difficult to differentiate between haram and halal because of their double standards.

The people of Bangladesh are pious; they pray at the mosque; they perform Roza, give Fitra and Zakat regularly and most of the Imams, Huzurs, and Islamic scholars like to preach Islam peacefully so that everyone can perform the rituals of Islam appropriately. But it has been found that some of them have tried to grab political space; they deliberately tried to give this country a characteristic of fundamentalism. But, why are they doing it? My country is not a country of fundamentalists. My country is a peaceful country and Islam is a religion of peace. Then, why these certain types of people are trying to color this country as a country of fundamentalist; by whose influence; by whose direction; for implementing whose hidden agenda?

We often found unruly militant processions at the road of Dhaka. But it is not practiced in other Muslim countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Jordan, Dubai, Qatar, or even on the land of Mecca-Medina, Saudi Arabia. Who is responsible for the bloodshed of Muslim brothers in the Middle East? Who was responsible for passing an anti-Islam regulation in a country like France which was the most moderate European country? Who is responsible for shutting down doors for Muslim people in the developed countries? The people of our country need to understand this. We need to realize that who is the enemy of the state; who is creating a nuisance; who means pulling back Islam? ISIS killed such a huge number of Muslims over the years that no other country or armed forces in the Middle East had killed such a huge number of Muslims in the last ten years. How can a Muslim kill another innocent Muslim? We need to realize these matters deeply.

I have pointed out very precisely that only certain type of Huzur uses YouTube to provoke innocent religious people of our country; they often jump out of excitement while preaching on YouTube; they even sit at a throne sized chair while getting fanned from behind. On the other hand, our prophet Hazrat Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam ruled the state by sitting at the stairs and minbar of the Mosque.

Time has been changed. Nowadays, we are reading religious scriptures not only in Arabic but also in different languages. We are fortunate enough to watch a lot of accomplished religious preaching via YouTube and today is Digital Bangladesh Day; I would like to congratulate our honorable Prime Minister and the fellow country people as eleven crore people are using Mobile SIM and seven crore people are using Facebook. Nowadays, we can browse anything on any topic just by sitting here.

I would like to suggest that you can watch and hear via YouTube the speeches and preaching of Moshe Sharon, an Israeli historian of Islam and the faculty of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem who possesses a piece of very deep knowledge about Islam. The English preaching of Imran NazarHosein, a notable Islamic scholar, author, Imam, and philosopher from Trinidad and Tobago also portrays exemplary Islamic brilliance. If you hear them then you would feel like becoming Muslim again. On the other hand, in our country, one certain type of Huzur uses YouTube only to deliver hatred, rumor, excitement, confusion, and fundamentalist ideas. It is to be realized that what they are disseminating.

So, on behalf of the state we the people present over here need to take the necessary actions and responsibilities. We need to implement an all-inclusive education system so that students of Madrasa can also work in the mainstream sectors. The establishment of Madrasa and Mosque should be the state’s responsibility and it should not be built by unlawfully possessing government land. We the people over here need to take necessary strategic and technical planning to ensure the implementation of an all-inclusive education system so that the Madrasa Students can enter into the mainstream occupations.

The people of our country are very pious; they love and respect the enlightened Islamic Scholars, Imams, and Sufis. Our honorable Prime Minster starts her day by reading from Holy Quran. Most of the country’s people are peace-loving Muslims and we will continue our love and respect towards our religion of peace and our enlightened Imams, Islamic Scholars, and Sufis. But it won’t be tolerated, if one certain type of people or group tries to blackmail us by using our pure religious beliefs. The people of Bangladesh need to be aware of such ill activities and as a part of the government, we need to play our role towards the state. As I have said earlier, we want to assure and reassure that.

By expressing my gratitude and respect towards Bangabandhu and all the enlightened Islamic Scholars, I am ending my speech. Again, take my victory greetings for being in the Month of Victory; greetings for Digital Bangladesh Day; greetings towards the honorable Prime Minister, the people over here, and the whole citizen of this country for installing the last span of Padma Bridge three days ago. We want to move ahead altogether. There is only one alternative of moving ahead and that is- continuously moving ahead under the firm leadership of the honorable Prime Minister.

Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.
